So the Conservatives will hold onto power by making a deal with the Democratic Unionist Party.
The liberal left are of course outraged at the prospect of the Tories working with the DUP because they oppose abortion and gay marriage. Unsurprisingly I don't share these concerns. However, a deal with the DUP does worry me. The British government should not be getting mixed up in the murky world of sectarian politics. To favour the Protestant Unionist community in Northern Ireland at the expense of Catholics could have dangerous ramifications for the continued peace of Northern Ireland. Since Brexit, there has been a worrying increase in political tension there, as seen in the failure to form an executive administration. For the national government to pick a side could seriously enflame things and in the long run endanger the union that Conservatives are so keen to preserve.
