Evening Standard: Britain deserves better than this horror show

Evening Standard: Britain deserves better than this horror show

Editorial (by you know who)

"For those who want an alternative to the dangers of Jeremy Corbyn it means the urgent task facing Conservatives — of trying to win back the young, the better-educated, the urban and the ethnic minority voters they lost — will be delayed until it may be too late.

For those who want a pragmatic approach to Brexit it means the necessary compromises aren’t forthcoming because leading ministers don’t want to risk alienating the Tory Brexit wing ahead of a future leadership contest.

For the country it means we continue to have a rudderless Government when we face huge challenges beyond Brexit, as our economy falls behind and our place in the world is diminished. Britain deserves a better movie than this."

ConservativeHome: Hong Kong is a battleground between tyranny and the rule of law. Conservatives must pick a side.

ConservativeHome: Hong Kong is a battleground between tyranny and the rule of law. Conservatives must pick a side

by Gerald Miles

"Sadly, like a jealous lover the Chinese state in its quest for control can suffer no rivals. Over time they have slowly eroded the freedoms of the people of Hong Kong and persecuted those who actively lead opposition to them. Three of the great young men of their generation, Joshua Wong, Nathan Law and Alex Chow were imprisoned recently for a crime that they had already once been punished for. That crime is leading the Umbrella Movement; for organising that non-violent assembly of people they had already been given (and completed) a lengthy sentence of community service. In an apparent deliberate attempt to further harass them, the Chinese government has retrospectively appealed their case and in effect found them guilty again and issued a new punishment (in breach of the solid legal principle of double jeopardy, that you cannot be retried again and again for the same offence). The fact that they were punished once for peaceful protest causes anger in the Conservative mind, but the fact that they can (at the command of the state) be effectively re-tried and punished a second time is a cause for howling outrage."

Independent: George Osborne urges Tory MPs to defy Theresa May over foreign students

Independent: George Osborne urges Tory MPs to defy Theresa May over foreign students

George Osborne has called on Conservatives MPs to defy Theresa May and vote to remove overseas students from the Government’s migration targets.

It comes after new official figures revealed that previous data had massively overestimated the number of students who remain in the UK illegally after finishing their courses. The real figure is just 4,600 – a fraction of the 100,000 estimate that has been the basis of government policy for years.

In an editorial for the London Evening Standard, which Mr Osborne edits, the former Chancellor claimed Ms May was the only minister in David Cameron’s Cabinet arguing that students should be included in the figures. Her argument is said to have been based heavily on the 100,000 estimate that has now been discredited.

Kyle Orton: The Syrian Regime Helped the Islamic State Murder Americans

Kyle Orton: The Syrian Regime Helped the Islamic State Murder Americans

"The Asad family regime in Syria has long been known to have had a key role in the formation and sustenance of the Islamic State (IS) and its predecessors. Without the Asad regime’s assistance, the IS movement could not have hoped to pose such a challenge to the Iraqi government, regional states, and Western interests and citizens. This has been underlined in a series of Federal Court rulings in the United States that have brought together evidence on this matter. In April, another such ruling found the Asad regime liable in the murder of three more Americans."

Inerrancy and Worldview, by Vern Poythress

Vern S. Poythress, Inerrancy and Worldview: Answering Modern Challenges to the Bible, 2012 Crossway

In this book, Reformed theologian Vern Poythress addresses a number of modern challenges to the authority of Scripture, such as challenges from language, science, culture and historical studies. The author offers helpful answers to the problems raised by these intellectual challenges. The final section of the book is more pastoral, dealing with the attitude Christians need to take toward Scripture.

Poythress spends a lot of time talking about the use of the word 'gods' in the Old Testament. He deals with the argument that this proves that the authors of the Old Testament were polytheists and thus undermining monotheist Christian theology. While acknowledging that the word gods can be applied to actual demonic entities in Scripture, he sees the word being used primarily as polemical rhetoric, referring to gods believed in, rather than gods that exist. This topic is dealt with at length in Michael Heiser's Unseen Realm. Poythress oddly makes no reference to the application of the word 'gods' to angels in Psalm 97:7 (angels in Hebrews 1:6). I would suggest that the word 'gods' in the Old Testament is used more broadly than we would use it, being applied to spiritual beings that we would not necessarily call gods today. Thus, whether the authors of the Old Testament were polytheists is a question of semantics not theology.

Regarding the tension between the Genesis account and scientific claims, our author acknowledges that there are a number of ways of harmonizing this tension however, the only view he expounds is the Mature Creation Young Earth view, that is that God created in six days, a universe that appears more ancient. He does not acknowledge any of the significant problems with this view.

Poythress deals with some quite complex intellectual issues, such as language theory in this book. He does his best to make these accessible to the average Christian reader, but I think many Christians would find this book rather too deep. On the other hand, I think many more educated readers might find it simplifies some of these academic questions too much. It thus finds itself occupying an uncomfortable middle ground.

Given that this book deals with the subject of Biblical Inerrancy, it is disappointing that it fails to address the key problems of Inerrancy today. JP Holding in his book, Defining Inerrancy, demonstrates just how contested the definition of Inerrancy has become. Some hold that Inerrancy has become too elastic among Evangelical scholars, allowing individuals to hold that some portions of Scripture might be fictional, which they argue is a liberalizing trend, while others hold that the term is redundant and useless if such flexibility is allowed. Poythress sidesteps such crucial questions altogether.

Peter Hitchens supports staying in the Single Market!

Mail Online| PETER HITCHENS: They squawk about Brexit... and miss the easy escape

"So to David Davis and Liam Fox and Philip Hammond, may I suggest what is known as the Norway Option? You are all blundering around as if you've never even heard of it. Yet it answers all major questions.

It does not require long years of detailed negotiation. We can lift it off the shelf, take it out of the box, and switch it on. It will work straight away.

It doesn't get us completely out of the clutches of the EU. We'd still have to pay some money every year (nothing like as much as now) and accept their regulations when we traded with them, which is reasonable. But we can, if we wish, govern ourselves in all other matters.

Remember, the vote to leave the EU was a narrow one. It was a clear vote to leave, but it was not a huge, overwhelming demand for some kind of wild triumphalist leap in the dark. 'In victory, magnanimity' is a good rule, set out by the Leave campaign's hero, Winston Churchill. It means that you treat your defeated opponents with courtesy and generosity, seeking to win them over to your position, not trampling on them."

It's a very nice surprise to find that Peter Hitchens supports the 'Norway Option' for Brexit. This is a remarkably reasonable article. While I like Hitchens' support for the King James Bible and the Book of Common Prayer, he does tend to come across as a bit of an obnoxious right-wing type at times. I had expected him to be a block-headed hard Brexiteer, but he is evidently more sensible than that.

Militant Vegan Straight Edge Hardcore

I'm going through a phase of listening to a lot of militant vegan straight edge hardcore punk. A bit odd, because I love eating meat and drinking beer. I've been into straight edge hardcore since I was 17, admiring it's strong moral values. These more militant bands eschew the old school hardcore style of the more positive straight edge bands, going instead for a darker, more metal influenced sound, not far from death metal in some cases.

A lot of hardline vegan straight edgers are opposed to abortion, which makes them more consistent than those who support animal rights while supporting abortion.

In a sense, animal rights/ militant vegans have a lot in common with those of us who are pro-life, in that we both believe our society is guilty of perpetrating genocide on a mass scale. Both animal rights activists and pro-lifers have found that conventional political channels have availed little success and so have focused on direct action and protests.

ConservativeHome: Economists for Free Trade should be called Economists for Protectionism

ConservativeHome: Economists for Free Trade should be called Economists for Protectionism

by Garvan Walshe

"Their plan for unilateral free trade looks attractive. Economically, there´s no difference between a legal trade barrier and a physical one. Imposing a barrier on imports is like “putting rocks in your own harbour” as the economist Joan Robinson used to say. But they neglect the fact that international trade negotiations take place between protectionists. They are really an exercise in countries saying to each other: “I’ll take this rock out of my harbour, if you’ll remove that one from yours.” Unilaterally fishing your own rocks out deprives them of an incentive to remove theirs.

And though Minford is right to say we have no reason to protect inefficient manufacturing industry from foreign competition, modern trade isn’t about tariffs anymore. It extends into politically sensitive ‘rocks’ equally able to impede commerce. These are treacherous reefs: immigration policy, labour laws, animal welfare regulation. The benefits of modern trade agreements accrue from their mutually assured removal, which makes countries adopt the same standards. It must be added that Matt Ridley is wrong, mutual recognition of standards isn’t enough: should we, for example, recognise American animal welfare standards for livestock, if they recognise ours? Or what would Americans think if they had to allow all cladding approved for use in UK buildings to be fitted on American skyscrapers, however combustible American regulators considered it to be?"

Business Insider: Former Tory minister threatens to quit the party if Theresa May delivers a Hard Brexit

LONDON — Former Conservative minister Baroness Altmann has threatened to quit the Conservative party if Prime Minister Theresa May pursues a "hard" Brexit.

Speaking to the HuffPost, Altmann, who served as Pensions minister under David Cameron, said she would consider walking away and even joining a new party in the event of Britain crashing out of the European Union with no deal.

"The Government has put forward papers but the papers are a wish list. What if we can’t have it? What if it’s not achievable?" the peer said.

"I am hoping there’s room in the mainstream parties for people with different views.

"I am not a dyed-in-the-wool Tory. I do think there are a number of people in the party who are very concerned with no deal."

MySanAntonio: Critical questions need to be answered in transgender debate

MySanAntonio: Critical questions need to be answered in transgender debate

by Robert Jensen

"Let me be clear: I am not rejecting the internal subjective experiences reported by people who identify as transgender, nor am I suggesting that bigotry or violence against people who identify as transgender is acceptable. But until there is a coherent explanation of the transgender movement’s claims, it’s not discriminatory to maintain certain sex-segregated facilities, especially those that give girls and women privacy and safety from the routine intrusions of a male-dominated culture (not because transgender people are a distinctive threat, but because blurring the lines based on individuals’ unchallengeable assertion of an identity will lead to predators exploiting the ambiguity).

The underlying problem, from a critical feminist perspective, is institutionalized male dominance, what has long been called patriarchy. If we ever transcend the rigid, repressive and reactionary gender norms of patriarchy — which constrain all our lives — people would feel free to live authentically without claiming they belong in a sex category that is contrary to the physical reality of their bodies.

Transgender activists acknowledge that we know little about the etiology — the cause or causes — of transgenderism. Within the transgender movement there is disagreement about whether this is a condition that requires medical treatment or just an aspect of identity like any other. Based on current knowledge, responsible public policy should approach transgenderism with a mental health model that explores people’s distress without immediately making assumptions about what the symptoms mean for identity. As long as the movement demands that we accept transgender as an identity that cannot be questioned, the policy questions — not only bathrooms, but whether it is ethical to give children powerful drugs to suppress puberty as a treatment for gender dysphoria — will be not only unresolved but unresolvable."

Evening Standard: Britain must welcome international students

Editorial

"But immigration also enriches our society. It fosters diversity, which throughout history has led to more creativity and innovation.

Advanced nations that have shut the door to newcomers now find themselves ageing fast and shrinking as a presence in global affairs — whereas those with open societies maintain a big role in shaping the world we live in. This is especially true when it comes to student migration.

Foreign students enhance our economy and bring revenue to our universities, which funds research and allows them to top the international league tables."

Huffpost UK: Economist Who Claims £135billion Hard Brexit Boost For UK Guilty Of ‘Violence To Basic Facts Of Economic Life’

Huffpost UK: Economist Who Claims £135billion Hard Brexit Boost For UK Guilty Of ‘Violence To Basic Facts Of Economic Life’

Claims that UK will be £135billion a year better off after Brexit are “laughable”, according to a former top Government economist.

Jonathan Portes, former Chief Economist at the Cabinet Office, tore apart suggestions from anti-EU academics the UK is set for a huge boost after Brexit.

The claims were made by the Economists for Free Trade group, which also predicts an eight per cent fall in prices in the event of a Hard Brexit if the Government were to quit the EU without a deal.

Portes took to Twitter to pour scorn on the report, suggesting the group – which includes leading Brexit economist Patrick Minford – made basic and fundamental errors in their research.

The idea that the UK should unilaterally drop tariffs as these people seem to think is insane. It would mean the complete destruction of British manufacturing. No countries pursue a policy of absolute free trade with anyone anywhere; it's the whole reason countries make trade deals.

The Feast of Saint Pius X

O God, who to safeguard the Catholic faith and to restore all things in Christ, filled Pope Saint Pius the Tenth with heavenly wisdom and apostolic fortitude, graciously grant that, following his teaching and example, we may gain an eternal prize. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Glorious Pope of the Eucharist, Saint Pius X, you sought "to restore all things in Christ." Obtain for me a true love of Jesus so that I may live only for Him. Help me to acquire a lively fervor and a sincere will to strive for sanctity of life, and that I may avail myself of the riches of the Holy Eucharist in sacrifice and sacrament. By your love for Mary, mother and queen of all, inflame my heart with tender devotion to her.

Blessed model of the priesthood, obtain for us holy, dedicated priests, and increase vocations to the religious life. Dispel confusion and hatred and anxiety, and incline our hearts to peace and concord. so that all nations will place themselves under the sweet reign of Christ. Amen.

Marian Maximalism, by Jonathan Fleischmann

Jonathan Fleischmann, Marian Maximalism, 2016 Academy of the Immaculate

This book, by a Catholic layman, defends Marian Maximalism, which takes as its starting principle, the saying of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, that of Mary, we can never say enough. We can never be too devoted to Mary, or trust too much in her intercession. A foreword is provided by Cardinal Raymond Burke, who speaks about the importance of the book, particularly in relation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and Our Lady of Guadalupe's role as patroness of the American continent. Fleischmann begins by demonstrating the traditional validity of the Marian Maximalist principle through the writings of the saints. In particular he makes use of Saint Maximillian Kolbe, the ultimate Marian Maximalist. He defends Kolbe from the charge that he was excessive in his statements on Mary's exalted position. He counters the claim that Vatican II opposed Marian Maximalism by arguing that the documents of Vatican II affirm Mary's mediatorial role and are in harmony with Maximalism. He makes the interesting claim that the 'exaggerations' warned about at Vatican II were particularly directed at a cultish group called the 'Army of Mary,' who ended up worshiping their founder.

Fleishmann contends that there is no such thing as a Marian heretic; that is one who has fallen into heresy through exaggerated ideas about the Blessed Virgin. He argues that feminists who want to feminize the divine have little interest in Mariology and that if some feminists were to start worshiping Mary as a goddess, she would not be the Mary of Nazareth, the mother of our Lord, but simply the application of the name Mary to a pagan goddess. He does concede, late in the book that some Catholic theologians have made errors in their Mariology, but these are not heresies as such.

Fleischmann takes the Scotist view that the incarnation would have occurred even if the Fall had not taken place. This view has important implications in making the Mother of God part of God's original design for the universe. Our author provides an excellent quotation of Venerable Futon Sheen, demonstrating how Mary is the ultimate realization of womanhood:

"Every man who pursues a maid, every maid who yearns to be courted, every bond of friendship in the universe, seeks a love that is not just her love or his love but something that overflows both her and him that is called "our love." Everyone is in love with an ideal love, a love that is so far beyond sex that sex is forgotten. We all love something more than we love. When that overflow ceases, love stops. As the poet puts it: "I could not love thee, dear, so much, loved I not honor more." That ideal love we see beyond all creature-love, to which we instinctively turn when flesh-love fails, is the same ideal that God had in His Heart from all eternity—the Lady whom He calls "Mother." She is the one whom every man loves when he loves a woman—whether he knows it or not. She is what every woman wants to be when she looks at herself. She is the woman whom every man marries in ideal when he takes a spouse; she is hidden as an ideal in the discontent of every woman with the carnal aggressiveness of man; she is the secret desire every woman has to be honored and fostered; she is the way every woman wants to command respect and love because of the beauty of her goodness of body and soul. And this blueprint love, whom God loved before the world was made, this Dream Woman before women were, is the one of whom every heart can say in its depth of depths: "She is the woman I love!" "

However, he does not look solely at the western tradition, but also shows how the Byzantine tradition, particularly in the Hesychastic movement acknowledged the greatness of Mary. He singles out St. Gregory Palamas for particular praise in his Mariological thought. He also brings up Our Lady's title of Daughter of Zion, showing how Mary is the archetype and fulfillment of Israel. He writes:

"This feminine dimension of the theology of the Old Testament- from the "virgin Earth" out of which God created the first man Adam, to his helpmate Eve, to the Woman of Genesis, at enmity with the serpent, to the "woman saviour" stories of Esther and Judith, to the personification of Israel entering into a covenant of love with God, to the feminine Sophia of the Book of Wisdom- becomes embodied concretely in the Immaculate, the Jewish Virgin-Mother, Spouse of the Holy Spirit and Coredemptrix with Christ: Mary."

Fleischmann acknowledges that some may feel that Catholic theologians speak of Mary as though she was a goddess, but he counters that this is balanced by their recognition o the absolute transcendence of God. He discusses the way in which Our Lady of Guadalupe bore the visual trappings of an Aztec goddess. He writes:

Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared in the clothing of a goddess, but not because she wanted to deceive St. Juan Diego and the native people of the New World.... Why would this woman appear like a goddess? It can only because in Mary's perfect humility she appeared to St. Juan Diego exactly as God saw her and wished her to be seen: exalted above all other women on Earth, the one "highest after Christ and also closest to us," who "shines with purity greater than which none can be imagined, except for God's," and who possesses "that fullness of holy innocence than which, under God, one cannot imagine anything greater, and which, outside of God, no mind can succeed in comprehending fully."

Given that Marian Maximalism is directly opposed by it's opposite, Marian Minimalism, I think it would have been helpful if Fleischmann had included a chapter on Marian Minimalism. Defining it's opposite would have shed a lot of light on what Maximalism is. While he quotes Blessed John Henry Newman and Saint Bonaventure favourably, both men made statements that sound like minimalism, that is warning against Marian excess. While I love Blessed John Henry Newman and am devoted to him, some of his criticisms of Marian 'excess' make me feel uncomfortable. Fleischmann would have done well to have engaged more directly with those voicing such concerns.

I thought this was a really beautiful exposition of the glories of Mary and an encouragement to greater devotion.

The Washington Post: This week shows Trump was always about race

The Washington Post: This week shows Trump was always about race

by Jennifer Rubin

"Now while Bannon’s demise was inevitable, so was the train-wreck, potentially fatal news conference in which Trump’s true connection to white nationalism came gushing forth. Forget the canard that Trump’s campaign capitalized on economic insecurity. (On average, his voters were richer than Hillary Clinton’s.) Don’t buy the notion that this was all President Barack Obama’s fault and the result of identity politics — a kind of blame-the-victim that posits 21st century white racism is caused by 1960s racial and gender politics.

No, at the heart of Trump’s campaign and the center of the Fox News operation, which incubated a Trump-ready electorate, has always been an appeal to white grievance, which Trump and Bannon were all too happy to gin up with fables about immigrants stealing whites’ jobs, African American killing fields in big cities, murderous illegal immigrants and, quite blatantly, an appeal to Southern infatuation with the Confederate myth of the “lost cause.” Trump’s vilifying all Muslims with a broad brush and his description of Mexicans as murderers were not incidental to his campaign; they were its distinguishing features."

TheJournal.ie : 'Sorry, UN. Ireland's abortion laws are progressive, modern and compassionate'

by Niamh Uí Bhriain

"Firstly, there is no right to abortion under international human rights law. That is a fact, and a fact easily verified by looking at the UN’s human rights charters and treaties which so many countries, including Ireland, have signed up to.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights doesn’t mention abortion at all, but it does say that all human beings have a right to life. That the preborn child is a human being is a matter now long established by science. As a matter of fact, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child points out that ”the child by reason of his physical and mental immaturity, needs special safeguards and care, including appropriate legal protection, before as well as after birth.”

This is what human rights treaties are designed for – to ensure that people who are most vulnerable are not denied their human rights. It’s hard to think of anyone more vulnerable than a preborn child."

The Guardian: 'Unraveling our national fabric': Romney condemns Trump after Charlottesville

The Guardian: 'Unraveling our national fabric': Romney condemns Trump after Charlottesville

Mitt Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, warned of an “unraveling of our national fabric” on Friday as he excoriated Donald Trump over his defence of people involved in a neo-Nazi rally.

Nearly a week after white nationalists led a bloody protest against the removal of a statue of Confederate general Robert E Lee, Trump continues to face backlash for blaming “both sides” for the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Senior Republican officials, titans of business, military leaders and even members of his own administration have rejected Trump’s view of the events and his attempt to draw moral equivalence between white supremacists and anti-racist counter-protestors.

On Friday, Romney wrote in a Facebook post: “Whether he intended to or not, what he communicated caused racists to rejoice, minorities to weep, and the vast heart of America to mourn.

“His apologists strain to explain that he didn’t mean what we heard. But what we heard is now the reality, and unless it is addressed by the president as such, with unprecedented candor and strength, there may commence an unraveling of our national fabric.”

CapX: What’s the point of Theresa May’s government?

CapX: What’s the point of Theresa May’s government?

by Alex Massie

"And in place of confidence, then what? Strife? Quite possibly. Confusion? Certainly. Every smoke signal emanating from Whitehall suggests the actual process of Brexit, as opposed to the psychological satisfaction gained from the decision itself, is proving to be hideously more complex than might be reckoned ideal. Ministers have not yet been straight with the public and the longer they peddle the line that all will be right on the night, the more they set themselves up for a fall should the public begin to worry that, actually, life’s just a little more complicated than that.

On the Irish border, for instance, London assures us everything is fine and perfectly workable. The UK’s frontier with the EU will not be a real frontier, or at least not the kind of border people imagine when they hear the term. Dublin, awkwardly, disagrees. This, the Irish say, is not an “Irish Question” at all; it is instead a “British Question” and you got yourselves into this mess, so you can get yourselves out of it.

As the European Commission says, frictionless trade is not possible outside the single market and customs union. This is not a threat, or a rejection of British proposals; it is merely a statement of a clear and present truth. Brexit is not a Lampedusa novel: it is not possible for everything to change so things may remain the same. All of which leads inexorably towards the dismal conclusion that the reason Mrs May keeps her cards so very close to her chest is that they are very low-ranking cards."

Independent: We need to dispel the dangerous myth that it's only Asian men who sexually assault young women

by Naz Shah

"So seeing a headline which says “British Pakistanis ARE raping white girls...and we must face up to it” is beyond personal to me.

Such an incendiary headline and article is not only irresponsible but also sets a very dangerous precedent and must be challenged. Let me explain why. Where another community is over-represented within a model of criminality, like for example, in cases of wider child abuse, where nearly 90 per cent of the perpetrators are white men we wouldn’t suggest that white people “are raping children” or use the whole community to describe the actions of a few criminals. That would not only be horrific but ridiculous.

I also have two sons. Blanket racially loaded statements like these set them up to fail before they even reach their teenage years.

Anyone who knows me knows that I am the first to challenge wrong wherever it happens. This includes within my own Pakistani community. I continue to challenge the patriarchal system and misogyny in the face of death threats – and I am not about to stop, that I can assure you.

But what I won’t accept, or tolerate, is a narrative that demonises every Pakistani man as a rapist. I won’t."

by Areeq Chowdhury

"For argument’s sake, let’s assume the premise of your arguments are true. That child sexual exploitation is a problem unique to the British Pakistani community. The solution would therefore be to engage with British Pakistani communities and to enable them to tackle the problem head-on. But what do you hope to achieve by writing a column about it in the Sun? Have you been briefed that the Sun has a large Pakistani readership? Are Pakistani mothers and fathers buying copies of the Sun to catch a glimpse of Page 3? If there are huge numbers of Pakistani people reading it, why haven’t you addressed the article to them? When you refer to British Pakistani men as “these people” it sure doesn’t sound like you’re speaking to them directly."

Sarah Champion's comments in The Sun were inflammatory and unhelpful.

Former Presidents George HW Bush and George W Bush have called on the US to "reject racial bigotry, anti-Semitism and hatred in all forms".

They are the latest Republican figures to weigh in on the backlash to Donald Trump's latest remarks blaming "both sides" for violent clashes in Virginia.

It culminated with a woman's death and nearly 20 wounded when a car ploughed into a crowd at the far-right rally.

National Review: Fire Steve Bannon

National Review: Fire Steve Bannon

by David French

"Bannon’s actions indicate that, if nothing else, he’s a vicious opportunist. As alt-right leader Richard Spencer explained, under Bannon’s leadership, Breitbart turned into a “gateway to alt-right ideas and writers.” His former colleague Ben Shapiro called him a “vindictive, nasty figure, infamous for verbally abusing supposed friends and threatening enemies.” Vindictive men who promote the work of racists and normalize their ideas obviously shouldn’t be within 100 miles of political power, never mind two steps from the Oval Office.

Earlier today President Trump clearly and explicitly repudiated racism and white supremacy. This was a positive step, a vast improvement from his statement on Saturday, which pointedly omitted any reference to white supremacy, Nazism, or their acolytes. While today’s political violence is still far from that seen on the worst days of the late 1960s and early 1970s, this weekend’s events have rightfully shaken millions of well-meaning Americans. If the president wants to take decisive action to distance himself from America’s most hateful elements, there is one thing he can do today: He can fire Steve Bannon, the man who gave them a platform."

The Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady

Almighty and everlasting God,
You have taken up body and soul
into the heavenly glory the Immaculate Virgin Mary,
Mother of Your Son: Grant, we beseech You,
that, ever intent upon heavenly things,
we may be worthy to be partakers of her glory.
Through Jesus Christ Your Son, our Lord,
who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit,
One God, forever and ever. Amen.

O Blessed Virgin Mary,
united to the victorious Christ in heaven,
you are the image and first-flowering of the Church
as she is to be perfected in the world to come.
You shine forth as a sign of sure hope and solace
for the pilgrim People of God.
In your Assumption,
you manifest the fullness of redemption
and appear as the spotless image of the Church
responding in joy
to the invitation of the Bridegroom, your Son,
who is the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.

Grant that we may follow your example on earth
thereby imitating your Son as well
and being enabled to share your glory,
with Him for all eternity.

ConservativeHome| Nicky Morgan: You’re welcome to your new Democrat Party. I’m sticking with the Tories – to fight, fight and fight again for moderation.

"If one-nation liberal Conservatives listen to these siren voices, what would it say about the Tory Party we now have? To accept the argument for creating a new party would be to accept that the Conservative Party can no longer appeal to the British political centre ground. I refuse to accept that proposition. Because without that centre ground we can never hope to be a majority government again.

As someone who has had to fight, win and hold a marginal seat in the Midlands I know what it takes to win over those who have supported other parties and to build a broad coalition of local support. The same principles apply at a national level.

The Conservative Party is, and always has been, a broad church. There now appear to be some, both inside and outside the Party, who want it to become a narrow ideological shrine, appealing only to a narrow and ageing group of supporters. This does nothing to win over the average voter who doesn’t think about politics much but, when they do come to elect a Government, want a party standing on a platform of a sound economy, good public services, an effective and fair welfare safety net, a global outlook and committed to a strong defence capability."

The British political system just does not work well for new parties. I don't think there is a realistic prospect of a centrist 'Democrat Party,' and if there was they ought to come up with a more original name. I am glad Nicky Morgan is making the case for moderation in the Tory Party.

Mail on Sunday: My country must come before my party if Theresa May sides with the hardliners, writes former minister ANNA SOUBRY

"Mrs May is making a great mistake if she allows her policy to be dictated by the Brexit ideologues. They effectively brought down John Major, David Cameron and, arguably, Margaret Thatcher – and will not hesitate to do the same to her.

I am proud of my loyalty to my party and my country.

People have asked me two questions, if the worst happened and we staggered recklessly towards a ‘Hard Brexit’ that would destroy the lives and livelihoods of my constituents: Could I ever see myself joining with like-minded people who want to save our country from such an appalling fate? And has that moment arrived yet?

The answer to the first question is ‘it is not impossible’; the answer to the second is ‘no’.

But I would be betraying my principles if I did not make it clear that country must always come before party."

I hope this is more than just bold talk. Anna Soubry failed to vote for a number of amendments to the Article 50 bill that might have softened Brexit.

Kyle Orton: Iran and Russia Are Using the Taliban Against the West

Kyle Orton: Iran and Russia Are Using the Taliban Against the West

"Russia first admitted they were supporting the Taliban in December 2015, allegedly to contain the Islamic State in Khorasan (IS-K). Moscow maintained connections to various factions in Afghanistan even after its withdrawal in 1989. Though relations with the Taliban were testy for much of the 1990s, there were efforts by the Taliban to “stabilize” relations via Saddam Husayn. The Coalition in Afghanistan has complained of Russia extending political legitimacy to an intransigent Taliban and Russia has also opened up training camps for the Taliban in Tajikistan. Last month, convincing evidence was uncovered of Russian weaponry being transferred to the Taliban.

It is likely that the Russia gambit is what sealed Mansour’s fate: it gave Mansour options that some in Pakistan saw as a threat to their control of the insurgency in Afghanistan. Moscow is indeed thinking along these lines, of displacing Pakistan, which still remains (officially) in the Western column, as the major sponsor of the Taliban, and therefore making itself the address the West has to call on to make peace in Afghanistan. For this reason, elements in Islamabad were even forthcoming with information about Mansour to the Americans."

From Teilhard to Omega

Ilia Delio (editor), From Teilhard to Omega: Co-creating and Unfinished Universe, 2014 Orbis Books, New York

This book is edited by Sr Ilia Delio, a Franciscan sister who has given up wearing religious dress, as these American sisters seem to do. I have not read any of her other books, but I have heard she is not very orthodox. This book itself is a collection of essays reflecting on the implications of the thought of Jesuit thinker Teilhard de Chardin in various fields- theology, ethics, philosophy and science.

Being very interested in the concept of Sophia and Sophiology, I appreciated Kathleen Duffy's essay on how Sophia can be found in Teilhard's thought, particularly in his poem 'The Eternal Feminine.' She writes:

"Teilhard's eternal feminine embodies the spiritual power of matter as the feminine aspect of God's nature embedded in all of creation and captures Teilhard's profound understanding of what is occurring in the cosmos. The eternal feminine has many prototypes- Beatrice of Dante's Divine Comedy, Goethe's Eternal Feminine, Sophia of the Wisdom literature, and the Virgin Mary to name but a few. Like each of these prototypes, Teilhard's eternal feminine personifies the cosmic unifying and spiritualizing force at work in creation; like Wisdom, she is at play in creation and delights in its every facet; like Dante's Beatrice, she is a guide for the journey into God."

Duffy provides us with her own poem, "Sophia," which is an updated version of Teilhard's Eternal Feminine poem, incorporating a panoramic view of contemporary scientific cosmology.

There are many insights in this book and they offer some very fresh perspectives on Teilhard de Chardin, but there is a worrying modernist agenda thoughout. Most of the writers suggest that the categories and concepts of traditional Christian theology are inadequate in the wake of evolutionary science and cosmological developments. They do not specify how exactly theology needs to change. These seems to be the methodology of the modernists in today's Catholic Church; avoid expressing outright heresy or disagreement with magisterial teaching, but continually harp on the need for unspecific changes.

The Daily Caller: Ted Cruz Calls On Justice Department To Investigate Charlottesville Attack As Domestic Terrorism

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is calling on the Justice Department to investigate the driver of a car that plowed through a crowd of protesters in Charlottesville, Va. on Saturday, an act which the Republican is calling domestic terrorism.

“Having watched the horrifying video of the car deliberately crashing into a crowd of protesters, I urge the Department of Justice to immediately investigate and prosecute this grotesque act of domestic terrorism,” Cruz said in a statement shortly after the driver was identified as 20-year-old James Alex Fields Jr.

Fields, who is from Maumee, Ohio, allegedly drove his 2010 Dodge Challenger through a group of counter-protesters gathered in Charlottesville to demonstrate against thousands of white nationalists and neo-Nazis who were holding a rally to protest the removal of a Robert E. Lee statue in a local park.

A 32-year-old woman was killed and at least 19 others were injured in the vehicle attack. Graphic video of the incident appears to show Fields driving through a swarm of people before slamming into another vehicle. A group of people then swarmed on Fields’ vehicle before he slammed the car in reverse and sped back down the road.

Saint Pontian and Saint Hippolytus, pray for us, that we would be reconciled with our brethren with whom we differ.

The Guardian: Britain must ask for more time to negotiate Brexit

The Guardian: Britain must ask for more time to negotiate Brexit

by Gina Miller

"In view of these challenges, the most logical and practical approach would be to seek an extension of the withdrawal period. This would allow time for meticulous planning to limit the damage of Brexit. It would allow us to start on all the huge tasks that need to be completed before we leave, including establishing new institutions – which would have to be staffed and trained to implement the necessary new UK laws – while adapting other institutions, such as the Border Agency and HM Revenue & Customs, as well as setting up control mechanisms for medicines, chemicals, aviation, nuclear imports and food regulation. New fisheries agreements must be put in place for shared stock management in North Sea and Atlantic waters, new border arrangements between Northern Ireland and Ireland worked out, World Trade Organisation tariff schedules and quotas must be negotiated with 163 countries and new trade measures must replace EU measures protecting UK industry against dumped imports, without which the steel industry in South Wales, for instance, could be wiped out immediately after Brexit. Not to mention the tens of thousands of laws that would have to be repatriated. Quite a to-do list.

The request for more time should be made as soon as possible. The 27 other members would have to approve an extension, but they would be more inclined to agree as it is in everyone’s interests. In any case, the longer the uncertainty over a looming cliff-edge persists, the more UK-based businesses will have to plan to move parts of their operations to mainland Europe. The governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, has noted that uncertainties about the eventual relationship are weighing on businesses. “We all need some level of certainty and confidence that the politicians are not making things up as they go along,” he said."

Huffpost UK: Solidarity With Gina Miller

Huffpost UK: Solidarity With Gina Miller

by Matt Carr

"Throughout this process, Miller insisted on the simple principle - which had until Brexit been taken as an axiomatic component of British democracy - that parliament should have a say in a crucial decision of such unprecedented national importance. For that she was mocked by the tabloids as the ‘millionaire Remainer’; condescended to by the ghastly Kwasi Kwarteng; subjected to a vicious hit-piece in the Daily Mail which described her as a fake and a self-publicist.

Naturally she has also been threatened with sexual violence and death, because for too many people in this country, it is unacceptable that an ‘uppity’ coloured women should stand in the way of ‘the will of the people’ and remind them that the country’s democratic institutions are supposed to act as a check on executive power. After all, as the racist aristocrat Rhodri Phillips put it, while offering £5,000 to anyone who would run Miller over, ‘If this is what we should expect from immigrants, send them back to their stinking jungles.’

So Miller has been threatened with gangrape, and lynching, and many other fantasies pulled from the most rancid sewers of white racism. She has been told that she should be beheaded and burned at the stake. And now she has been threatened with acid attacks, to the point when she and her family don’t dare go out onto the street, and she is considering leaving the country.

That is Miller’s reward for upholding the UK’s democratic institutions, and for showing more courage than the entire political class between them: she and her family must now choose whether to live under 24 hour security in a state of terror or leave the country. Too many people have been silent about this, perhaps because they don’t want to be associated with someone depicted by the Daily Mail as ‘the poster girl of Remain’."

Kyiv Post: The case for arming Ukraine

Kyiv Post: The case for arming Ukraine

by Paul Niland

"While Russia projects the idea of a better armed Ukraine being some kind of “escalation” of events, in reality the examples of Ilovaisk and Debaltseve show that it is actually Russia that is responsible for escalations. The counter argument to arming Ukraine is that it would lead to an increase in hostilities, this idea has simply not stood the test of time, because while Ukraine has not been armed with U.S. weapons, the Kremlin increased its hostility towards Ukraine anyway.

The reason why the Pentagon’s request for Javelin missiles makes sense is because it will blunt Russia’s ability to carry out large scale offensive operations designed to capture more population centres. The residents of Mariupol and Avdiyivka (where fighting also rages every day) will be safer in the knowledge that they will not suffer the same fate as their compatriots in Debaltseve and Ilovaisk.

The key to ending the war in eastern Ukraine has always been to increase the costs to Russia for their actions. There are many ways to do this, and providing Ukraine with fearsome tank destroying capabilities is an excellent way to start."
