Daily Telegraph: The 'Living Wage' is economically useless and intellectually empty

Article by Ryan Bourne

Something strange has been occurring in Conservative circles in recent months. Otherwise sensible people who believe in free markets, and who denounced Miliband’s proposed price and wage controls just two months ago, started claiming that the labour market simply didn’t work for wages between £6.50 an hour (the National Minimum Wage) and £7.85 (the so-called "Living Wage"). It was vital, they said, that we introduced a statutory Living Wage.

Totally agree. George Osborne just threw away all his free-market credentials. The Conservative Party should know better than to buy into this 'Living Wage' nonsense.

This smacks of the worst side of the Conservative Party under Cameron; being totally focused on wrong-footing the Opposition and gaining short-term popularity.
